April 3 2020, News Original Playwriting
The 2020 Original One Act Playwriting competition is now open!

Authors from across the South-West are invited to submit their scripts to the Secretary of the SFD by noon on Wednesday 9th September 2020.
If you have always wanted to have a go at writing a one act play, then here is your chance. Remember ~ if you are a young author, under 25, then your entry will be judged in a separate category with its own winner. There will be cash prizes of £100 for the winners in both the general and young author category. There may also be up to two highly-commended runners-up who will receive cash prizes of £25. Other short-listed scripts may receive certificates of commendation.
All the scripts that we receive are read by the competition’s panel: Rod Hancock and Philip de Glanville, both long term stalwarts of the Somerset Festival of Drama, and me, a relative newcomer to the SFD and current co-ordinator of the competition. A short list is then drawn up and SFD groups will be offered the opportunity to take one of the short-listed scripts and turn it into an original production for presentation at next year’s County Drama Festival.
Please see the SFD website for the competition rules, regulations and entry form.
Given the strange time we find ourselves living in this spring I am wondering how many dystopian plays we may see, though some light hearted comedies may be the order of the day?
Looking forward to reading your scripts – please get busy with those pens and keyboards!
